Support » Networking WordPress » Over 100 sites in a Multi-Site Install?

  • I was wondering if anyone had experience with a wordpress multi-site install having over 100 sites?

My company is looking into creating a system that will have around 130 sites installed in 1 multi-site. There maybe even more added in the future. We do have multi-site running now for some conference and member sites but are limited to about 15 per install.
Do you think having over 100 sites on a multi-site safe?
Do you know if performance will be an issue?

If you can share any info you might have regarding this topic that would be great.

    Thanks in advance
    Chad

  • There are multisite networks running behind the scenes at many large sites.wordpress.com being the prime example.

It requires careful planning butcan be done.A search for WordPressVIP sites and performance tweaks shouldhelpyou.

I run multisites with 70 and 100 sites respectively without any trouble. How large the sites are in terms of pages/posts, how many users you have, how much traffic you expect and the performance of your themes/plugins are all points to factor in. A single poorly-written plugin can drag your sites down even if everything else is running well.

A system administrator with multisite experience can provide insights on points such as server space, memory allocation and database optimization. Have a plan for periodic database cleanup to keep it from becoming bloated with orphaned tables, options for plugins that are no longer in use and so forth.
