I have been trying to troubleshoot why I am getting random errors when I open certain posts on my blog. I keep getting the 500 Server Error page.

I looked through the error_log files and spoke to my hosting company (bluehost). They pinpoint the problem to the index.php file in the root directory of my domain, saying that this is the file returning the error.

I tried re-intalling wordpress 4.2.2. and I keep getting these error pages.

Anyone can help me please? Thank you. Domain is livinghealthywithchocolate.com

  • Hello, salabinha, & welcome to the WordPress support forum.

First, might I congratulate you for providing the site url. It’s really helpful. Thank you. 2nd, you’ve got quite an unexpected niche there–nice going!

In your WordPress directory, (which in your case appears to be your web root folder), there is often a file called error.log. I accessed the site at between 10:15 & 10:25 a.m. Pacific time & did catch a 500 internal server error. Can you tell us what the log says? Also, in your control panel,, under the heading of logs, there is usually an error log, which contains entries as well. Are there any that relate to this error?

Lastly, if BlueHost says it relates to your index.php file, can you please post it here?

Please let us know if you need additional help/clarification.

    Jackie, thank you!

I am not really sure how to read the error logs and which one exactly would show the error. I did a search for the error logs under this domain and I have included all of them in a file in dropbox so you can take a look at them. I have also included the index.php file that Bluehost referred to in the folder.

    Here’s the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pwxi4meiovg21g0/error-logs.zip?dl=0

Thank you so much for your help. It’s very fustrating because I do have a lot of people visiting the site daily and some posts randomly don’t open and get a 500 error. THANK YOU!

salabinha, I have your file now. Thank you–that was a great idea! I’m looking. I know this is really frustrating, but I’ll need at least a little time to study these logs. I’ll get back as soon as I have something I feel is plausible.

Jackie, In the control panel on bluehost, I was able to see the error.

I got the 500 error on my site then I looked in the error log. Here’s what the log said:

[Tue May 19 12:44:05 2015] [warn] [client 69.195.124.97] (104)Connection reset by peer: mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server

I just spoke to Bluehost again. This time the guy updated the version of php I was using on my account to php 5.4 single php and I have not been about to get the 500 error since that. I guess that might have solved the problem, but I will keep checking the site to see what happens.

Well, I can guarantee this–that index.php file isn’t the cause of the error, as it’s the standard WordPress fare.

What is throwing multiple database errors is your wp-subscribe plugin.

I just got your note about BlueHost updating PHP. That’s a good thing. Let’s see if that solves it. Keep in touch, won’t you, please?

Thank you Jackie! I will report back if the error comes back.

Regarding the wp-subscribe plugin you mentioned, is that the ‘Subscribe to Comments Reloaded’ plugin or ‘Ninja Popups’? These are the only 2 subscription plugins I have installed.

I think it’s the subscribe to comments 1, but, truthfully, I’m not at all certain, & Mr. Google was absolutely no help, dang his hide!
