Hi! I’ve searched the GeneratePress support forum but haven’t found an explanation of a problem I’m having.

The site renders with some overlapping text about 25% of the time, as in this screenshot: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/207446/d6b808e6099f0488c80dd77a6a2a76f2
The text also spills over out of the text box, and in the post header the date overlaps the author’s name.

Although this happens pretty often, it usually resolves on a refresh.

Is this a known issue that I can fix?

    Thanks!

    Odessa

    Hi Odessa,

    That’s weird!

    What browser are you using?

    Hi Tom,

I mostly use Chrome. I haven’t been able to replicate the problem on Firefox, IE or Opera.

The site I’m working on is at http://www.jessamineprice.com.

It doesn’t have any plug-ins installed (yet, hopefully I’ll get this text thing fixed up and start tweaking).

I did experiment with font sizes a bit when I first installed this theme, but I think the only thing I actually changed was the font.

Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help!

Can you try using one of the default fonts (not Google)?

    Does it still happen?

I am seeing that you have some plugins installed, can you deactivate all of them and see if it makes a difference? I can’t reproduce this as of right now.

    Let me know 🙂

I’ve switched the font to Arial and I’ll see if that helps. The problem isn’t cropping up on loading the site a couple times right now, but I haven’t found any pattern in when it happens.

I’ll keep testing it today with the Arial and see what happens (and then start experimenting with plugins).

I’ll let you know the results!

    Thank you!

    How’s it going? 🙂

Hi Tom! Since I went to All Arial All the Time, no problem. I guess for the time being, I’ll stick to the default fonts for my text. I’d love to do Open Sans, though! If I discover anything else, I’ll let you know.

By the way, I love the theme, just got it up and running with add-ons on another site of mine and the site loading time is improved as well as the look of the site. GenPress has just the right amount of options for me–I’m a writer who’d rather be writing, but I do want to make my sites look good.

The deciding factor for me was that GeneratePress does a great job with readability. Most WP themes appear designed for photographers, not writers. I want generous font sizes and spacing that invite readers in, and these are astoundingly hard to find in WP themes. Most themes have tiny font sizes, and minimal spacing. I appreciate that your theme works for writers and readers. Thanks so much!

That’s super weird. Have you tried deactivating all plugin and then trying Open Sans? Still the same problem?

Glad you’re enjoying the theme, and thanks so much for purchasing the add-ons! 🙂

I haven’t deactivated the plug-ins, simply for time reasons. The problem doesn’t happen all the time, so I don’t know how much of the day I would have to muck around to figure out if it’s fixed or not.

Instead, I’ve gone to Verdana for the text, still a default font, but one I prefer to Arial. It’s not a problem to use default fonts for the text, and if I start craving Open Sans and have time on my hands, I’ll do the plug-in thing. As long as I can use Google fonts on my title and headers, I’m happy–and the headers and title have been working fine.

    Thanks!

I just released a new version of GP that I’m hoping fixed this issue.

If you’d like, you can try switching back to the font you were using.

Let me know if it’s fixed or not 🙂

    Thanks!

    Hi Tom!

I upgraded to the new GP and tried going back to google fonts (Merriweather Sans) in the body.

Unfortunately, good news, bad news. Something new is going wrong with the text–words now overlap each other. The old problem of words overlapping outside the text box stopped happening, however.

You can see the occasional overlaps here: chrome-extension://alelhddbbhepgpmgidjdcjakblofbmce/edit.html

It looks like it’s mostly happening when links appear.

To make this more of a mystery, I have another site that runs on GP (newest version) and it’s currently using a Google font (Open Sans) without any problem. It was an accident that I set it to Open Sans, because I’d concluded I should stick to the default fonts, but since setting it to Open Sans, I haven’t seen a single problem with overlapping text or spacing issues. And I spend a lot of time working on this site, which is at http://www.koreandrama.today.

Because Open Sans is working on that site, I tried Open Sans on the site with the issue. No overlapping text.

So it seems the problem is not google fonts in general, but something weird about Merriweather Sans. Go figure!

Thanks for all your hard work on GP! My busiest site is loading quickly and looking good.

Thanks for getting back to me! 🙂

Out of curiosity, does Merriweather Sans work on your second site, or do you notice the same issue?

Thanks so much for all of your feedback!

I haven’t tried Merriweather on my second site. When I switch it to Merriweather and preview, I don’t see any problems in the preview. But I’ve always got visitors on that site, so I’m not going to publish changes in case the Merriweather does mess with the text. I don’t trust that font now!
