Can i create a child theme from any theme i download from the wordpress.org site

    Hello, Please i am new to wordpress. i know how to create child themes from parent themes like [twentytwelve,twentythirteen etc]. All i just want to know is if i can create a child theme from any theme i download from the wordpress.org site? and i hope i won’t lose anything in the cause of doing that? thank you ahead
