Support » Plugin: Easy Updates Manager » Theme Updated Despite Being Disabled

Despite having the Theme updates disabled I ended up seeing one of my sites have the theme updates automatically updated. The WP site it happened on is on WP 4.1.1. The version of Easy Updates Manager is 5.0.0.

The updates happened on Twenty Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen and Fifteen.
No harm happened in this case, as these are not the activated theme being used.

The active theme had no updates to have happen. If there were auto updates on it, there would have been problems.

In my case, as said, there was no harm done, but wanted you to be aware the Theme Updates Feature may have a flaw in it.

    Thanks for the feedback carolinbenjamin.

I’ll do some testing this weekend to make sure that when theme updates are disabled, out of date themes are NOT automatically updated.

I’ll reply to this thread what I come up with.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience and I’m glad nothing bad came of it.

    carolinbenjamin,

Can you please tell me what your automatic update settings for themes are set to? I’m assuming disabled, but I’d like to make sure.

That is correct. They were set to Disabled.

Interestingly I have had your plugin for awhile on a number of sites and have not seen this happen before on any of the sites I have, or manage.
So this was an odd occurrence it seems for some reason.

It happened on a website that is a ‘sandbox’ to a live site. And I went on this afternoon to do some testing. And within a few minutes of being logged onto the website, I got an e-mail sent out stating that these theme updates had happened.

Never have seen an e-mail announcement like that of updates either.
    Whole thing was strange.

As said, no harm happened, especially be on the ‘sandbox’ site and all, but several of my live sites run on Thesis. And my experience with Thesis is you never, ever would want that to ever automatically update. It needs ‘hand-holding’ during any updating. 🙂

Sounds good. I’ll disable theme updates and automatic updates, then downgrade some default themes and see what happens.

So here’s what’s happened so far. WordPress 4.2.1 came out, which was auto-updated as expected (I didn’t turn this off).

The three themes I version downgraded have still not been updated, which is also expected.

Not sure what the culprit here is, but I’m going to run this plugin through some more tests this week to try to duplicate these update issues.

Just as a FYI — I handled updates on several other sites this weekend and several of them had themes that were waiting to be updated, but none of these other sites behaved like the one I reported the issue for, which updated its themes on it’s own.

On all of the other sites I dealt with, which had the Easy Updates Manager, which I believe was installed identical as the site where the problem issue occurred, behaved as hoped. The updates did not auto occur, and the expected behavior happened – which was to wait for me to manually handle the updates.

The website where the issue occurred is hosted on Hostgator. But there are other sites on the same hosting space that behaved properly.

If you are not hearing of other people with this issue, maybe it was just some odd occurrence that is not repeating in large number of websites? None of my other sites experienced the same problem.

@carolinbenjamin: Seeing as this is not happening on any other of your WordPress sites that are hosted on the same space it cannot be the host that caused this. So it must have been something on your website. Is this problem still happening on the website?

I have not seen the same issue — but then there are no more themes that need updating so it is hard to tell if it will ever re-duplicate.

I’ll let you know if there seems to be any other weirdness, but so far so good.

Thanks for checking back in about it.

Yes, let us know if the problem occurs again so that we can help you fix it.

Our website’s theme just updated automatically. Theme updates was enabled but automatic theme updates was disabled.

The theme is Zerif Lite and we are on version 4.2.2 of WordPress.

We also have a subdomain with the same theme and plugin settings, and the theme updated automatically there too.
