Support » Fixing WordPress » GoDaddy neutered my wordpress, need to reinstall, but worried it won't work

  • This might be long. My apologies.

I started with WordPress on GoDaddy over two years ago. I transferred to a VPS host a year ago. I noticed, but didn’t have the knowledge that when trying to do “How To’s” and finding solutions to problems that I didn’t have the same layout. A friend of a friend looked at the back end and discovered that things were missing, things that apparently GoDaddy blocked. I’m able to update, I’m able to install plugins, I’m able to function as a normal website, but new themes tend to have problems or not work 100% and so I want to fix this by doing a fresh install of WordPress on my server. I know I need to back up everything first, but will this actually fix whatever GoDaddy did?

If anyone has any advice or help that would be great. I’m using cPanel on my VPS if that’s info that’s needed. I’m also worried about backing up my images since there’s a lot.

  • I have had multiple WP sites hosted on GoDaddy for many years, and seriously doubt that they blocked or removed anything, except maybe a few misbehaved plugins that are known to cause serious performance problems on shared servers.

Themes, especially moving from one to another, are always going to have issues. There are no “standard” names or positions for widgets, so you will always encounter “lost” and/or “misplaced” widgets and widget content when changing themes. It’s just a fact of life in the WP world.

There are lots of threads and help already here and on other forums on how to properly back up and move sites from one hosting service to another.

I know the transfer took place a while ago, but happy to help if we can. We definitely don’t block or limit you in whats installed (other than like RonnieG said some plugins that misbehave or are security risks). If you have all the content backed up (which we always recommend you do), I would try a new install on a test or staging environment and then loading the backed up content into that and see if that resolves your issues. So if that woks you’ll know you’re safe to proceed on the live site. ^Colby
