I see that there is an update to the Customizr theme, but there is also a message with it: “Any customizations you have made to theme files will be lost.”

My problem is that I’m still very new to WordPress and Customizr (absolutely no idea about CSS, either), so I don’t really know if the changes I’ve made count as changes to theme files or if they’re just things that will carry across. If the latter, of course, everything is good. If the former, though, I’m not sure how to go about making certain that I’ll be able to get everything looking as I’ve done in the first place after doing the update. It took me a long time to get things the way I want for my little blog, and I’d hate to have to start over. 😉

My blog is at <http://www.sandymike.net/blog>. Can anyone tell me what I should do next? Thanks so much!

The big question – the changes you have made were done using:
a) Editing theme core files
b) Using a Child Theme

If a) you will lose your changes
If b) your changes will remain, which is why we always recommend using a Child Theme

If you haven’t updated yet, suggest you address the above before you update.

Thanks very much for your reply, rdellconsulting. It seems that this is rather bad news for me, since I don’t have a clue about how to do CSS, which it looks like is necessary for a Child Theme. 🙁

Next question: is there any reason why it would be a problem *not* to update?

Thanks again.

Short term: no, Long term: maybe

The theme is under continuous development, either fixing bugs or adding new enhancements. So you’ll be hindering yourself in the long run, but if you have a static site then that might not worry you.

Do you know what changes you have made? You need to make an audit. For example, look at the files in wp-content/themes/customizr. Examine the time-stamp and you should see the base date of the last update/installation you made. So any files you changed will have a timestamp later than that. Make sure you take a backup of those files, at least.

Thanks again for your further reply, rdellconsulting. My site is a blog, so it changes as I add new posts, though I haven’t changed how it’s formatted.

I made a lot of changes back in January, 2015, when I created the site, but I could go through all of the various settings and try to duplicate them. I did look at wp-content/themes/customizr, and the date there is 3/23/2015.

I’ve exported a copy of my blog, using the Export function in Tools in my Dashboard; I”m guessing I could always restore from that, if I royally mess up in trying to figure out this Child Theme thing, right? The only thing I’m not certain about is whether it also exported the media files — mostly photos — that I have on the blog, as it doesn’t specifically say that it does so.

Hi sandywf, contents (page posts medias etc) are unrelated to the theme.
Customizr options you set are also preserved when you upgrade, if there aren’t bugs 😀
Cheers

One final — I hope — question:

I downloaded the Customizr-Child theme and installed the zipped download to my Dashboard, as per the instructions. My blog now looks exactly the same as before, and I’ve double-checked to be sure that the Child Theme is definitely in place.

So, is it safe to go ahead now and update Customizr without losing my customizations?

Thanks so much!

Never mind! LOL! I’ve updated, and it seems that everything is now just fine. Thanks again for your help, rdellconsulting, and for yours, d4z_c0nf! Whew! I think I made it much more complicated than it actually was.

Oh dear, I missed the biggest question – are you talking about Content or Style changes?

Assume makes an Ass of U and Me!

Happy Easter anyway, and I’m glad you updated successfully.

LOL! Thanks — it all went very well, and I appreciate your help. 🙂
