  • Two new themes (one purchased and another downloaded from WP themes source) are not working when trying to update new theme. The error message in control panel says: “the stylesheet is missing” Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

  • It sounds like there is no style.css file in the theme. Either that, or it has the wrong permissions and wordpress isn’t allowed to read it.

Thanks Alex. I did check the files, and the style.css file is there.
As far as wrong permission, is it possible that programmers writing new themes for wordpress set wrong permissions for wordpress?

alexmansfield may say file’s permissions, does it have readable permissions?

how do I check for that? and if it doesn’t, how do I fix that? thanks.

Access your file via FTP and CHMOD it to 777.

i think i know what it means now. i tried changind permissions to 777, 755 and 644 (those are the settings of the working themes) but no luck. do i have to change setting on each and every file that comes with the theme, maybe?

CHMOD is a Unix command. It stands for “CHange file MODes”

You should be able to set the permissions to read/write for the entire folder.

You say the file is there yet cannot be accessed? Did you upload the file structure properly via FTP? Have you tried to view style.css from your Dashboards theme editor? Is there any content if you did?
