I just installed your plugin and I got a warning that there may be a conflict with Yoast SEO. I clicked to see Yoast and the warning went away.

Is Add Meta Tags plugin compatible with Yoast and not take anything away from Yoast?

I want to make sure I’m improving my site’s SEO, not taking away from it. Thanks

    Hello,

I just installed your plugin and I got a warning that there may be a conflict with Yoast SEO. I clicked to see Yoast and the warning went away.

Is Add Meta Tags plugin compatible with Yoast and not take anything away from Yoast?

Add-Meta-Tags, from a technical point of view, is 100% compatible with any WordPress plugin. It issues no compatibility warnings. It does not take away any functionality from other plugins.

However, if the user uses multiple SEO plugins and enables the same features to all of them, then search engines could be confused. People may call this anything except a plugin conflict. In fact, it is just the user that is doing it wrong.

I have no idea why they decided to issue a warning. You should ask them. Add-Meta-Tags is safe to use with any WordPress plugin.

PS: Could you please post the warning message?

    Hi George –
    this is the message
“The following plugins might cause (open graph) issues with Yoast WordPress SEO: Add Meta Tags”

I understand that as the user it’s up to me to configure everything but where can I get some information on how to use Add Meta Tags and not cause Open Graph issues with Yoast?

    thanks!

Yoast team seems to reject anything they did not create. It seems to me they consider themselves as the best of the best.

In my case, I use Woocommerce and have a custom product page. Yoast’s Opengraph did not produce the proper metadata. Disabled any relevant setting (now I use it only for title rewriting) and installed this great plugin. Now my metadata is perfect.

@george Notaras: Please let me know how to disable the article:author. All Woocomerce products have the site admin as author. Ability to customize it would be great.

@justinta: This warning is so ridiculous and confusing for the users that I will contact WordPress.org staff to have a discussion about whether such general warnings about 3rd party plugins violate the Developer Guidelines.

I understand that as the user it’s up to me to configure everything but where can I get some information on how to use Add Meta Tags and not cause Open Graph issues with Yoast?

As a rule of thumb: please do not enable similar features in multiple plugins so as not to confuse search engines. No other issues could be possibly caused.

    Kind Regards,
    George

@fesarlis: Hello, I had replied to your email with some general sample code about how to customize the generated metadata. If you need more help please start a new topic in these forums.

    Thank you (Ευχαριστώ πατρίδα).

All the info you provided is great. Yet it is not always clear what options constitute ‘similar features’. In that sense, it would be great if you told us exactly what features of your plugin could overlap with other SEO plugins. I guess that (unless you recommend all the common features to be deployed by your plugin :)) this would not violate any developer terms.

For example, let’s take schema.org markup. I (as a simple user) need more information to decide. What if your plugin sets microdata A and C, and Yoast’s sets microdata B and D? In that case I would want to enable both.

So (and since I really prefer to use your plugin) allow me to suggest a feature that can prove very useful.

You would add a page that just reads the site’s homepage and lists all metadata present. You could also provide the ability to disable ALL your metadata but NOT your plugin (not sure if you provide that already). In this way, we could see what metadata are set by the other plugins. Even better, you could do this automatically (list all metadata-others and yours) but not enable yours – to give us the chance to do it ourselves one by one.

Don’t know if I make any sense. Please let me know.

George & Fesarlis – thank you for your input.

George – I echo Fesarlis’ thoughts regarding it not being clear what options constitute similar features. I looked through both plugin settings and I’m not sure which settings trigger certain features.

@justinta: For instance, enabling the generation of Twitter Cards in more than one plugins would result in having 2 or more twitter cards in the HTML page, which would probably confuse search engines.

This is a general example of similar features. The generation of Twitter Cards can be a similar feature in many plugins.

In Add-Meta-Tags it is possible to turn on and off the generation of any of the supported types of metadata. I’m not sure if or how the same can be done in other plugins because I am not familiar with them.

@fesarlis: Sorry I missed your last comment.

It is impossible for me to scan the feature set of each plugin that adds meta tags and offer a table of compatible features. This is up to the user to do. I just develop a plugin, which can be customized either by enabling/disabling the various metadata types it supports or programmatically via filtering functions. This is the best I can do.

    Thanks once again.

One more comment: It would be great if rel=publisher that links to Google+ profile page appeared everywhere.

Based on that and generally speaking, I think it would be much better if you followed a similar approach to Yoast’s settings. I mean, to divide options per social network (FB, Google+ etc) and give us the ability to enable what we want.

The current approach causes a simple problem.

I developed a website. Then gave the customer access to edit content. However, most of the content was uploaded by me (let’s call me ‘admin’).

In order for the social metadata to appear, I (admin) must set the website’s social pages as being MINE. In other words, I must set the customer’s FB page in admin’s profile page. This is not rational.

@fesarlis I copied your post to a new topic.

An issue has been filed in the aforementioned plugin’s bug tracker and I am currently exploring all my options in order to resolve this issue in the most efficient way possible for Add-Meta-Tags users.

    (@gnotaras)

I had received numerous emails during the last months about plugin compatibility concerns. I hadn’t paid the proper attention to them. Admittedly, this was a mistake.

I’d like to let you know that I have taken all the necessary measures to monitor from now on both the public source code of popular web site optimization plugins for WordPress and the world wide web for incidents that involve the spreading of false information and confusion about Add-Meta-Tags.

    Plugin Author George Notaras

    (@gnotaras)

Future releases of the aforementioned plugin are expected to have an improved warnings mechanism that is less confusing.

Please send your requests or concerns about compatibility issues to plugin developers who raise such warnings.

Add-Meta-Tags is 100% safe to use with any other WordPress plugin regardless of its feature set.

A sticky topic stating exactly that will be added to this forum and my plugin’s FAQ.

Having said that, I will silently ignore further requests about compatibility either on this forum or my email/contact-form.

I’m marking this topic as resolved.

It appears they have locked the aforementioned issue before I can send my last reply. In their last message they claimed that Add-Meta-Tags overwrites (!) their meta tags and interferes with their functionality! How outrageously lame…

I am surprised by the methods and arguments they use in order to spread FUD to users.

I am really disappointed by myself having spent my valuable time trying to have a discussion with those people.

Fortunately, my points have been made clear to them in the most detailed way possible.

This is not my problem any more.

PS: This topic will remain open for now.
