First, this is still the best backup system available for WordPress.

Issue: After doing daily backups for a month or so, I started receiving error messages telling me that I had exceeded my 25 GB Google Drive limit. I couldn’t understand this because I set my max number of UpdraftPlus backups to 20. And, according to my UpdraftPlus ‘Existing Backups’ tab, I only had 20 backups available. Yet when I visited my Google Drive on the web, I discovered far more than 20–I actually had 35 backups–and the number was growing with each failed backup attempt.

In order to get UpdraftPlus to work again, I had to manually delete the ‘hidden’ backups from my Google Drive web folder and empty the trash folder. Is this normal behavior for UpdraftPlus or do I have something set incorrectly?

    Best regards,
    Ric

    Hi Ric,

How big is each backup? If each backup is over 1.2Gb, then 20 lots of that would exceed 25Gb. However – note that your Google Drive quota is actually shared with your other Google services as well – including GMail. i.e. It’s 25Gb for the entire Google account, not just GDrive. So, to investigate where your quota’s gone, you’d want to look at what other Google services you’re using too.

    Best wishes,
    David

    Hi David,

Sorry, I guess I didn’t clearly state the problem. It has nothing to do with other Google services or the size of my backups. The problem is that UpdraftPlus is NOT deleting my old backups.

For instance, a snapshot of my current backups are as follows: UpdraftPlus says I have 20 backups from March 19th to April 6th. When I select ‘Rescan Remote Storage,’ it still says I have 20 backups from March 19th to April 6th. Yet, GoogleDrive, on the web, currently has 24 full backups from March 16th to April 6th. UpdraftPlus is not actually deleting the GDrive backups that are older than 20 days–it just thinks it did. So, if I don’t continually go into GoogleDrive to manually delete the old backups, I will get the ‘out of memory’ error again before long.

    Thanks,
    Ric

    Hi Ric,

Can you post screenshots of what’s in your Google Drive, and what’s showing in UpdraftPlus, so that the ones that should be detected by a rescan, but which aren’t, can be identified?

    Okay David,

Not sure how best to post images on this forum so I just made a special page on my website to show the screenshots–> https://baronair.com/screenshots/ .

Currently, GDrive says I have backups from March 16th to April 8th while UDP says I have backups from March 21st to April 8th.

    Hope this helps,
    Ric

    Hi Ric,

Thank you. Please can you post your most recent backup log? Pastebin.com is a good place for posting text (and http://snag.gy for images, if you have a future need).

    Sorry David,

Pastebin says the log file is too big to post (for free users). Do you have an alternate location or even just an email address where I can send it?

    Hi Ric,

If you upload it to the same place you did the screenshots, then I can get from there. Or share it as a shared Dropbox or shared Google Drive link, or any other service of your choosing.

    Best wishes,
    David

    Hey David,

Before I post the Log file, is it harmless? In other words, will it list my GDrive ID codes (or anything that might compromise the security of my GDrive)? I’d hate to throw it out there and have every hacker on the planet gain access to my backups on GDrive.

    Best regards,
    Ric

Actually David, I found a more automated backup solution that works better for me. So, I’ll mark this as ‘Resolved’ because I’ve decided to use something else.

    Hi Ric,

I’m happy to say that we have found and fixed this problem, through the assistance of Ian in this thread: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/upload-timeout-to-google-drive

The fix will be in Monday’s release of UpdraftPlus 1.9.64; or users can get it now by updating to the development version – https://updraftplus.com/faqs/devversion/ – which is currently equal to UD 1.9.63 plus this fix plus a Slovenian translation. (It will still show as version 1.9.63 after installing – Monday’s 1.9.64 has some other tweaks too).

Thank you for your assistance in nailing this issue!

    Best wishes,
    David
