    Hi,
I’m writing a blog in another language and I want to translate the front end interface (eg names of dates, days, ‘leave a comment’ – so that the entire site is in the desired language. The language is a rare one (Cornish) and so doesn’t (to my knowledge) have ready-made WP translations.

I’ve got as far as knowing how to edit the .pot file using Poedit – but those files only contain certain terms – they don’t contain the names of the months/days, so I don’t know where WP pulls them from and how/if they can be edited.

I have zero coding/experience with the mechanics of WP – I’ve tried a few plugins but either they don’t work or they’re way above my level of understanding. I don’t need anything fancy like a switch language – just want to get everything in Cornish.
    Any pointers most gratefully received!

    Hi,

Have you tried the Say What plugin?

Thanks mindctrl – however, to use that I still need to know the strings/domains and I’ve no idea what those are or where to find them.
Months/days etc are in the locale.php wordpress file – other bits are in the theme files – other bit’s I’ve no idea (such as ‘leave comment’, ‘read more’.

I don’t mind going into the necessary files to edit them and then ftp them back to the server – but I don’t know exactly what files I need to edit, and I don’t understand the code to know which bit of the file to edit – I certainly don’t mind learning, but I just don’t know how to start.

Editing core WP files isn’t recommended, as you lose your translations when updating in the future. Have you considered creating an official Cornish translation? I’m sure the translation folks would love to have you! https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook/about/get-involved/
