• Hi. I figured this Misc. forum would be the best place for this discussion, since it is not specifically about a particular plugin ,or multisite, or forums, but rather all of the above.

I have neglected implementing any sort of caching for our growing multisite network over the years, since the majority of our traffic is driven through our SimplePress forums. I understand that serving cached pages for dynamic content can cause headaches. Recently though, we have been experiencing server load issues that cause me to revisit the idea of caching.

I have spent hours reviewing plugins and researching these forums, and other articles. My server manager and I are considering installing Memcached at the server level. And I have read mixed reviews about its interaction with (subdomain) multisite networks, and front-end caching plugins W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache.

NOTE: I reviewed all info tabs for both plugins and see no mention of Memcached for either, but did read one article mentioning config options for Memcached in W3TC.

We host 800+ blogs on the network, and maintain 5 featured blogs which could benefit from caching. It is site ID 1, however, that needs the performance boost most.

So, basically, I’m seeking feedback and recommendations from anyone with experience using server-side and/or caching plugins to improve performance with dynamic content sites on a multisite network.

Specifically, I’d love to hear from anyone running Memcached and/or plugin based caching with large SimplePress forums on the main site of a multisite network! (I know, a lot to ask for, but what better place to ask?)

We’re launching a site makeover soon, which also includes myriad random content and random images displayed throughout the site. I know I can exclude certain pages with most caching plugins, but that seems to defeat the purpose since it is our /forums page that generates the most traffic on our site.

Any feedback and recommendations are gladly welcomed. Thank you in advance for any recommendations or suggestions!

I’ve always read(and from personal experience) that W3 Total Cache is better and more friendly to other plugins than WP Super Cache. I run a multisite with 5 sections and use W3 Total Cache with no issues.

@Chitch1 Thanks for the feedback! Do you happen to run any discussion forums or have any other dynamic/random content on those sites?

We don’t run discussion forums but we do run a very active blog. If you have a small team, just use Disqus as your comment/discussion handler

Still looking for suggestions from anyone who may be running memcahed and/or caching plugins with forums or other dynamic content sites.
