Store and retrieve data from database

I am using wordpress platform for a sports website. What i want is to store the history between teams (For example wins, losses, points for and against, last match etc), and then through a form in the frontend, when a member chooses the 2 teams, to show the specific data. What is the best solution for me? I tried with custom post type, but i am not sure that this is the proper way to handle it.

All score matches are stored in database already, but i have no clue, how to retrieve them and show them, based on members selection..
