  • Have you installed WordPress yet? Here are the usual steps…
    1. Install WP
    2. Go to the admin (/wp-admin off the main address) and update any settings — usually start by adding an author, maybe change the theme)
    3. Then start to add posts. Once you are in the admin panel (especially in 2.7!!!), quite intuitive.

If you need help with step 1 above, probably need to know where you’re hosting it .. many hosts these days have installers in the hosting control panel — often Fantastico, which itself is a breeze to use.

I am so technically challended I am not even sure how to use a forum – okay, but I am a good writer, and I have three domain names registered at startlogic – one is a website already, in which I want to change to a blogging site, the other domain names have no site as yet.
I was looking at the closed forum about v-deck – must enagle cgi – went there and found the mySQL database – no site yet, what do I name the datatbase, how do I connect it to the site – see, I need hand holding help. Not sure I trust startlogic for that help. And I saw where there were problems trying to upgrade at startlogic.
Can I download wordpress from a wordpress site, set up my blog, and then upload it to startlogic?
I want to get started but have put it off for weeks out of sheer fear! I am beginning to read all the getting started info on the wordpress site – should I just read more before I start. Not always sure what they are talking about.

vicci — you sound as though you may need tighter help than reading here in the forum can possibly provide.

The install at startlogic is pretty much a manual process and vdeck is a tad more primitive than some of the hosting control panels, but not a terrible experience once you’ve gotten through one. Here is a nutshell of the steps you need to do ..

    1. in vdeck, find the database section and create a new one .. and a user with all privileges .. write this info down – you’ll need it for the wordpress install. the db name and db user name don’t matter much, you just need them for the install of WP itself
    2. grab the WP 2.7 files and ftp them to your site
    3. pull up the site url – it will kick off the WP install .. just fill in the blanks

Ping someone here offline if you need deeper help .. anyone who is answering posts here probably lives this stuff… me, I do wordpress and joomla .. plus custom php, mysql, and perl …. we all had to jump over the hurdle you’re looking at sometime.

How do I ping someone off-line if I need deeper help?

My blogging sites are redirects from my main site. To ftp should I just put the WordPress files under public or under the specific redirect file – I guess it would depend more on the database listed than on the domain name, right?

I downloaded WordPress and looked at the install guide in the read me file and it asked for some scripting which I didn’t really have answers to, but did go to startlogic v-deck to look for them. I could have startlogic support help me with those answers if I can’t locate them on my own and I have to absolutely have them. I am referring to changing that wp-config-sample to a wp-config.php or will that all happen by itself once I ftp the files.

You are saying pulling up the site url will kick off the install – how do I do identify that – is that the domain name?

I would get startlogic involved in this process but its the luck of the draw with tech support there. Then they offer paid support but if I pay them I will never learn myself, and I can only afford some up front fees, not continuing fees. I don’t know anyone locally who can help me. I hate to be a drag on anyone’s time. But if there are people out there who I can ping that will help, I’m all for that.

Thanks a lot for even replying, that was nice of you!

p.s. wordpress is listed in the install central on the v-deck –
you have to fill out a form – I could have them walk me through that form if necessary and just go that route, might be easier. Any thoughts – I wanted to do it differently because of upgrade troubles, but I maybe shouldn’t worry about that right now. They wanted a database name and that even threw me, but like you said, I can just give it a name for now.
    Thoughts????
    Thanks.

Vicci – you can ping me offline .. jim at jimesten dot com

This is pretty basic stuff but can be mind boggling if you don’t live it. Hook up with me offline .. I can have you up and running in 15 minutes. No $$ involved .. just happy to help out.

Can someone please help me, as I’m just getting started? I have already downloaded wordpress 2.7 and have made a mistake. Instead of opening up under WordPad I opened it under adobe and I don’t know how to chage it to WordPad. I need help. Thanks..
