• Hello –
I designed a site for a client using Canvas. They just received an email from Woo Themes stating “There’s an update for Canvas and it’s recommended that I use a child theme before updating because, otherwise, “Any customizations you have made to theme files will be lost”.

I made some customizations to the Theme custom CSS. How should we proceed? Would installing the child theme overwrite any of the theme customizations? (colors, fonts, layout and custom CSS, etc)

Is there a way to download/backup the current theme configurations just in case the child theme overwrites all of the work?

    Thank you

  • Custom CSS is not overwritten when the theme is updated. But always a good idea to backup the site before updating.

Thank you – but I am curious as to why it’s being recommended to use the Child theme before updating.

If you have modified theme files (i.e. style.css) under Appearance > Editor (or another way), those changes will be lost. A child theme avoids that problem.

Thank you again. I understand the point of the Child theme. What I don’t understand is why WooThemes is recommending to install the Child theme before I update the theme to the latest version.

I am not currently using the child theme.

Probably just a “warning” to anyone who unknowingly has modified theme files. If you need more clarification, you’ll have to ask WooThemes.
