changing permalinks

I currently have permalinks setting of
/news/%post_id%/%postname%/

I would like to remove the use of “category” that comes up when viewing pages of categories ie… news/category/weather or news/category/holiday

I have tried adding a name in the Permalink Category Base option but this doesn’t seem to work as when adding a Category base name it redirects to an individual post.

Any suggestions?
