• I manage two WordPress sites, and I have fallen behind in core updates. Is it safe to update directly from 3.8.1 to 4.1.1?

    Thanks…

    Okay … in that article, does the term ‘major release’ refer to a version number with only one decimal version digit?

    In other words, am I correct to regard 3.9 as a major version, but not 3.9.1?

    Thanks…

    Yes, correct, the .x is considered a major release – so you should be able to go from 3.8 to 4.0 and then to 4.1.1. Do backup your site and database first, though!

    Oh, that’s much better than I thought it would be. I was thinking that the pathway would have to be

    3.81 -> 3.9 -> 4.0 -> 4.1 -> 4.11

    I like two steps a lot better than four steps. Absolutely the site and database gets backed up first — I’ve worked as a sysadmin in the past, and I learned a healthy paranoia.

    Thanks…
