• This mod works just like it says, the only thing I ran into was some styling issues on theme integration.

I just finished setting this up for: http://spiritloveforum.com Check it out if you wanna see a preview

Before you integrate themes make sure you have the CSS slider all the way off to the left.

I’m giving this plugin 3 stars for lack of support and they took off the link to the phpbb automod package which is REQUIRED for this mod to work.

I have uploaded it to my server for anyone interested here: http://spiritloveforum.com/kingsblend/wp-united-release-phpbb.zip

The phpbb mod ONLY works for version 3.0.x

  • Wow.
The site integration is exactly what I was looking for, hoping for, but obviously I made some mistakes as it does not work for me.

Are there any other hints you can give?
    Protocols to follow?
    Tricks to be aware of?

For example… should WP-United be the absolute first thing to set up, then add other mods after setting this up?

I remember there were some issues/questions in setting up phpBB, but now I cannot remember exactly what they were about. I know there were times I had a path question… where something needed to go, because the path noted was not the same as my path structure.

Another question has to do with using Automod… or something like that. There were some automatic options and there is no way to tell if those are good choises or if one should stay away from them.

That is frustrating. I mean… I have a basic understanding of what’s going on and that means I *do* know how important permissions and paths are.

So when things go wrong, where do I turn?
I was absolutely convinced to give up on WP-United, but your success gives me a little hope.

If there is any way you can find the kindness to answer a few questions!

    THANK YOU!

Here is a breakdown on how I installed.

    1) Setup a fresh WordPress install for 4.1.1
    2) Install and activate WP-UNITED plugin for wordpress
    3) Create a new folder in the WordPress root called forum
    4) Extract phpbb 3.0.12 to the forum folder you just made.
    5) Install phpbb http://localhost/wordpress/forum/install/ (remember to delete the install folder when its complete)
    6) Download and Install Automod for 3.0.x (Extract contents of root folder to the /forum/ directory where you installed phpbb. Overwrite all files)
    7) Install Automod. Once again run the installer found at http://localhost/wordpress/forum/install/
    8) Once auto mod is installed purge forum cache and open the automod tab in the phpbb ACP and download the phpbb mod http://spiritloveforum.com/kingsblend/wp-united-release-phpbb.zip upload the zip and install the mod.
    9) After the wp-united automod upload install there is a link you MUST click to install the database aspect of wp-united. It will be in a green box during the automod install. You will get errors if you are on conflicting versions of phpbb and wordpress. You will have to force install. The default options will work. The mod is written for 3.0.10 but it will work for 3.0.12 and even 3.0.13 but I personally have not tested version 3.13
    10) Once successful go to the wordpress dashboard and run the wp-united setup.
    11) You must point to the config file in the /forum/ root for phpbb.
    12) Now you should be setup select the options you wish to use for the bridge.
    13) When it comes to theme integration I found this mod WILL NOT work for a full CSS integration. YOU MUST TURN OFF THE SLIDER FOR THIS. All the way to the left.
    14) You can play around with the way the theme integrates but I found that a statically cached simple header and footer works.
    15) I spent a lot of time changing the wordpress twentythirteen theme and the prosilver theme to fit my needs color wise and element wise so some tweaking is involved. Google Chromes inspect element feature is a LIFESAVER.

Also keep in mind I have only had this work with the phpbb prosilver theme. Subsilver breaks on theme integration I believe. Plus no one really uses that theme anymore. I can do some support here I suppose for basic questions. Ask away. I hope this helps someone. Enjoy!

    Thank YOU very much!
I will give this a shot.
Wow… appreciate your effort. Let me mess with this tonight. AFTER a bike ride to calm down, feel smooth and ready to tackle it.

You are welcome. I hope your bike ride was enjoyable. Ask here if you have any more questions.

Something I forgot to mention earlier is it’s a good idea to disable registrations in the phpBB ACP and let WordPress handle them. Of course with the user integration turned on. I like to use the paid memberships pro plugin for that but any registration plugin will do, even the default reg form is fine.

I also went into the phpBB code and redirected all registration links to the WordPress register form. I eliminated a lot of the notorious phpBB user spam by doing this.

    Have a great day!

    Hello again,
Just want to make sure I get the correct path installed correctly, so want to verify a couple paths.

    You wrote:
    3) Create new folder in the WordPress root called forum
    4) Extract phpbb 3.0.12 to the forum folder you just made.

    Fine.
My domain (http://www.mydomain.com) is located on the ftp server at:
    /home/mydomaincom/public_html

    My WordPress installation notes say:
A new WordPress 4.1.1 installation has been completed. Details of the installation are shown below:
    Path : /home/mydomaincom/public_html

So I believe the new “forum” folder would be located at:
    /home/mydomaincom/public_html/forum

When I look at the “phpBB-3.0.12.zip” file, it’s got a folder in it called:
    phpBB3

Inside that phpBB3 folder are 28 items, including 11 folders and 17 files.

Do these 28 items go into “forum” or does “phpBB3” with its 28 items go into “forum“?

    Thank you in advance.
I will take this one step at a time and get this answered first before going further. Hopefully my questions are clear. If I am not making sense, please ask away.
    Thanks again.
And yeah.. the bicycling has been good, except this week has been full of excuses. Tonight? No excuse. Am going! 🙂

Sorry for the delay on this reply. You want to extract the contents including all of the folders in the phpbb3 directory to the forum folder you made. Your path /home/mydomaincom/public_html/forum is correct. The forums index.php file should be in that directory. Then you can run the installer by going to /home/mydomaincom/public_html/forum/install/ in your browser.
