Appearance Editor

I wanted to edit the style.css page, but in the WP editor it says “You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information.” I read over the Codex thing and, although they were already set to writable, I changed all of the css and php pages to 777 to make sure I’d be able to make changes, but I still cannot do so.

This is undoubtedly a dumb problem, but I can’t seem to figure it out on my own. I’m assuming there’s a simple fox that I’m missing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
