    Hi UpdraftPlus Support!

What about working with a live environment for starting a new web application ?

The plugin UpdraftPlus simplifies backups (and restoration) for WordPress.

Why not creating a sub-domain (free with most of web hostings) and transferring the progress of my developer from the main domain to the sub-domain by using the plugin UpdraftPlus?

This way I would be able to work on the website application (on the sub-domain) without risking to messed up with the main domain.

Is it a good idea? Does the plugin UpdraftPlus can affect anything or not (files, database)?

Thank you very much for your time.

    Hi Xavier,

    Thanks for asking!

The Premium version of UpdraftPlus can do this – https://updraftplus.com/shop/updraftplus-premium/ – it has features for cloning a site at a new domain or sub-domain. (The free version restores only to the same website address as the backup was made on).

    Best wishes,
    David

    Dear David Anderson,

Thank you very much for your time and for your answer.

Tell me if I’m wrong but I think $70 for the Premium version of UpdraftPlus could be very useful and worthy because when the free version of UpdraftPlus clone a site at a new domain or sub-domain, the database and files move however references to the old domain name or location will remain in the database, and that can cause issues with links or theme display ?

On the new web site, if I try to manually search and replace on my entire database to change the URLs, I can cause issues with data serialization, due to the fact that some themes and widgets store values with the length of the URL marked. So when it changes, things break.

Am I correct? And is the Personal Premium UpdraftPlus version at $70 would allow me to change the domain name or URLs when I will clone a site at a new domain or sub-domain?

    Thank you

    Regards

    Hi,

Yes, that’s all correct. Data is search/replaced, including deserialized data (and JSON-encoded data too).

    Best wishes,
    David
