I’m sure this is simple, but I am just learning WordPress.

I have buddypress installed, latest version, so when I install your plugin I’d assume the register link would take me to the register page for buddypress. mysite.com/register

It looks like its trying to redirect to the wp-login.php?action=register
It just loops back to the login page when I click this.

Maybe there’s a setting I’m not checking that solves this? The plugin settings page is written in a scary fashion and I didn’t want to risk locking myself out.

  • Thank you for explaining the BuddyPress Registration problem so clearly. I will check this out on my test system and see what is going wrong.

FYI, I am sure you are right as I always knew there were issues with Registration but never had a clear idea of exactly what they are.

Sorry about “scary”, but I have bowed to pressure from plugin users who wanted features that can create Redirection Loops in certain circumstances: usually other plugins doing something unexpected that my plugin does not handle. It would be self-defeating if I did not explain the Risk.

I’ll respond here as soon as I have some answers. Thank you for your interest in the plugin!

Thanks for the quick reply, let me know if you need any information from me. I just created the site a few days ago and I have no experience(just a smart guy willing to poke around and learn), so I’m sure it could be a simple thing.

The only other plugins I have installed right now are bbpress, akismet, chat, quick chat, buddypress, contactform 7, google doc embedder

my theme is evolve(right now, testing a bunch) if that matters.

I just deleted and re-installed the plugin and now it works…wow very interesting, but I’m glad it’s working.

I’ll provide a review shortly as this appears to be working just as intended!

Normally, that would point to a Caching issue, but none of the plugins you list do Caching.

Yes, I agree: weird. Glad that you got it working properly. Let me know if you need any help at any point in the future.

Now it’s not working again πŸ™
I thought it was because I added the plugin called “New User Registration”, but I deleted both that and this plugin and re-installed. Still redirecting to that wp-login.php?action=register link.

Let me know if you think you can help.

I only installed the new plugin because I am trying to make my site private, with your plugin, and also moderate new registrations for approval. I’m not sure if there’s a better way that you can suggest.

    Thanks

I’ll resume the creation of a test system that I started before things started working for you.

I’ll let you know, here, what I find out.

I’m assuming you mean the “New User Approve” plugin when you mentioned “New User Registration”.

    Yes, sorry

Not being picky, but needed to clarify as people often give me a list of plugins that includes some that are not readily available.

The bad News is that I just tested this combination of plugins and everything works properly. But I need to verify a couple of assumptions:

    1. I am assuming that this is a normal “Single Site” WordPress install, not a WordPress Network (AKA “Multisite”)
    2. I am assuming that you are not hosting with wpengine.com

Here is what I tried: on the BuddyPress Settings page in the WordPress Admin panels, on the Page tab, I tried both “Register” and “- None -” in the Register field. If you first activated BuddyPress with General Settings of Membership turned off, let me know, as that seems to function differently, as the Register page is not automatically created by BuddyPress.

This still sounds like a Caching issue. Did you install WordPress from wordpress.org, or did you use an installer provided by your web host or someone else, or did your web host install WordPress for you?

Could you look on your Installed Plugins Admin panel and tell me if you see anything else besides?

I think you might be on to something with when I installed buddypress plugin. I had the site set that new users could not register, as I was still researching how to best control access.

I had to manually create a register and activate page due to that.

Perhaps this is why it’s not functioning properly.

I have godaddy hosting and that installed wordpress for me.

    All (8) | Active (8) | Must-Use (1) | Drop-ins (1)

Must-Use has System Plugin in it.
Drop-ins has object-cache.php APC Object Cache

Not sure what either of those are, to be honest.

Now we are getting somewhere. Must-Use and Drop-ins are plugins that are always activated. The Drop-in is definitely a Caching plugin.

I’ll do a little research on the godaddy site and get back to you.

    Alright, thank you!

I’m not going to be able to figure this out, as GoDaddy has a lot of different types of control panels, and different ways to install WordPress. Too many possible combinations of different possibilities to give you accurate advice.

I suggest that you talk to GoDaddy support and get them to explain to you how to “Flush the Cache” for your WordPress site. Basically, you will have to do that each time you change a Setting in my plugin. And probably sometimes when you change settings in other plugins, or even just activate and deactivate them.

In addition, I never use Caching myself because my sites are low enough traffic not to need it. So, my experience with Caching is limited, at best.

    Update:
There’s a flush my cache button on the dashboard for godaddy(No I didn’t have to ask them where it was lol)

I decided to just backup my theme settings and reinstall my wordpress.

I then allowed the new user registration in general settings.
Then installed buddypress, bbpress, and jonradio privatesite.
It succesfully redirects to the buddypress register page!!
I then installed new user approve and that seems to be working as well.

I will be having a few people join the site to test for me, and I’ll report back if there are any issues.

    TL;DR version
Make sure new user registration is checked before installing buddypress and this plugin

Thanks so much for the update!

Yes, I ended up reinstalling WordPress like you did, because simply deleting and reinstalling BuddyPress did not clear up the problem of missing BuddyPress pages.
