I have a WP site that was compromised last week and the hosting company did a reinstall.
WP works and I can see all my pages in WP, but when I click on any view in WP it shows a 404 message.

I have re-installed WP 4.1, deactivated all plugins, tried a number of Themes, updated to the latest, nothing changes.

I want to keep all the info.

Clues welcome what I can do next,

    Regards

  • You need to take a backup of your database, nearly all your content resides in the database.
Also take a backup of your “wp-content” subdirectories, probably uploads as well as plugins and themes.
    Also backup your wp-config.php file.

Now you can get more aggressive with your website.

First login to your WordPress admin, set your style of permalinks, Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks
click “SAVE CHANGES”, this will regenerate your .htaccess file.
    Does this help ?

Turn off all your plugins, chaneg to default theme.

Reinstall a fresh set of WordPress files. Leave plugins disabled, default theme.

    Out of ideas for now.

Before I posted, I re-install WP, then deactivated all Plugins and went to the basic WP2015 Theme. Still the same.

I have downloaded the DB, and am downloading wp-admin, wp-content and wp-includes, wp-config.php.

I do have a copy of all these files from Jan 2014. Could the problem be the wp-config file is point to a wrong DB?

I guess I could as my hosting company for an old copy?, but where could the problem be?

Finally, many thanks for responding to request for help.

    Maybe.
Suggest that you use phpmyadmin or other database tool to see how many databases you have, most likely you have just one, but your hosting could have created a new one when they reinstalled for you.

I checked the wp-config file with an earlier version and it is the same.

    Changed the Theme, no difference
    html pages show ok.
How exavtly do I create an htacess file?

I can see the pages in WP and modify them and save, but they cannot be viewed in WP and they don’t appear in the browsewr, only a html 404 message.

    I have 10 DB’s for different sites.

    Update.

I asked my hosting company for an earlier htaccess file, installed that and it now works.

Really appreciate your support, I guess the lesson is, make certain you have a complete backup of a website.
