WP Upgrade If You Have Alot Of Plugins & Themes

Unless am missing something here when I upgraded to 2.7 and lost my entire wp site including the admin cp as am new to WP and this is the first time am using it and I have nother WP site which is a fan site for a movie but am not bout to upgrade it till I get a better understanding of what is actually happening here – if it is me who is doing something wrong here and not even know it or if it is the actual wp script upgrade itself that has bugs and is not stable…

But is there a certain procedure I should follow if I have plugins installed on my WP site and also customized Themes? I mean is there a certain way to go about upgrading my WP with plugins and themes installed???

Cause am looking thru this support forum and all the upgrade to 2.7 related posts and alot of folks are having the same problem as me or close to it – eiether their entire site or part of their sites has disappeared after they upgraded 2.7…and am not seeing anyone truly helping them out with answers that would make sense or helpful advise…

Is this upgrade stable or is it something on our end (i.e. plugins, themes, permission sets, etc)??? I want to know cause am new to WP and after this upgrade which I done…am now hesistant towards any future upgrades from WP…I thought WP was so much more easier but after what just happened am startin to think the way I was doin my sites maybe more easier…no complicated stuff…

Am sorry for sounding rude and negative but am just frustrated and I would of thought WP offered some kinda automatic upgrade like the plugins in version 2.65 offered automatic upgrades via the admin cpanel but instead we gotta wipe out all our ole files and reupload the new version files and upgrade which I think was the major mnistake on my end…although I did upload the new files over the old files to overwrite the old files with the new files and part of my site disappeared so than I went and done it the rite way – wiped out all the files and reuploaded the new version files and my entire site including admin cp disappeared!

Wz up with that now?!

Hi Lisa,

Auto upgrade is now included in version 2.7 so after this, managing your WordPress will be really easy 🙂

When you say disappeared, do you mean your blog is now at the “like new” state with the initial sample post OR you get a blank page?

the entire site disappeared – but I ask my host to restore my site to their most recent backup

Can someone with more experience with WP Upgrades – upgrade my site to the latest version of WP once my host restore my site please?

I mean my entire site is like GONE!!! But I just ask my host to restore my site to their most recent backup…thank god they got auto upgrade in this version cuz that is scary for me as am new to WP and if this is an issue with every upgrade…forget it..I go back to HTML

and when I say disappear am talkin LITERALLY DISAPPEARING as in TOTAL BLANK SITE – NOTHIN!! NO CONENT!!! NO ERROR MESSAGE!!! NADA!!!

If it is blank, I guess you missed the step to run wp-admin/upgrade.php ?

I did not miss a step…I did upgrade twice and followed the instructions for all of them

Excuse me but are you a tech support rep for WP? Do you know or have experience to all these issues?

Am sorry but don’t mean to come off rude and bitchy here but like I said in my original postings – I followed all the instructions to a T

sorry am just frustrated…but I did say in my original post when i started this thread that i followed the upgrade instructions – i upgraded not once but twice following the instructions…

You haven’t posted a link to your blog so I’m not sure if you’re getting just a white, blank page or something else. One possibility is if it’s just a white, blank page is that a PHP error has occurred. Depending on how your webhost has configured things, you might have an error_log file of some kind in your blog’s directory that may contain any PHP errors. You might also look at the Apache error log for anything. This is generally accessible from your webhost’s control panel.

If you do have such a file, it might point out where and in what file the error is occurring.

When I upgrade, I do the following which matches what they have at http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress :
1. Download the latest version from here. I unzip the contents to my hard-drive. I then re-zip the contents so that it will unzip on the webhost without the /wordpress/ directory at the beginning.
2. Backup my database. In my case I use SQLyog on my PC to connect to the database at my host and then back it up as a SQL dump.
3. Backup my entire wordpress directory. Actually, I copy the contents to a new folder. I connect to my host via SSH, go to the public_html directory and used the command cp -r -p blog blog265 in this case. If there happens to be a problem then I can simply rename the directories.
4. Go into the plug-in administration of my blog and deactivate all my plug-ins. I only have like six plug-ins so not a big deal.
5. delete the following:
- entire wp-admin folder
- entire wp-include folder
- entire wp-content/themes/default folder
- entire wp-content/themes/classic folder
- entire wp-content/plugins/akismet folder
- the wp-content/plugins/hello.php file
- all the files in the main /blog directory except for:
- config.php
- robots.txt
- favicon.ico
- .htaccess
- php.ini
- phpinfo.php
Again, I do not delete any of the above files mentioned. I also do not delete my custom theme, only the ones that come with WordPress.
- Upload the WordPress zip file I made via FTP.
- Login to webhost via SSH and unzip the file. For me this is faster than uploading all the files individually via FTP.
- Run /wp-admin/upgrade.php per the instructions to upgrade the database if needed.
- Re-activate my plug-ins in the admin section.
- I do have some custom code in the main WordPress files that I then go back and add in.

i decided to start over and do a fresh new install of wp version 2.7 – clearly there is an issue with the upgrade so am goin to start a whole new blog site with a fresh new install of 2.7

A quick thought, Lisa, some people have had problems if they’ve installed the blog in a subdirectory – then deleted the files & then uploaded the new files to the root. (or vice versa).
So, you’ll be going to the “old” location of the blog, & the files will be in the new one.

That may well explain why even the wp-admin/upgrade.php page wasn’t showing, especially as you’d clearly had your blog working before.

too late i got fed up last nite and wiped out the whole thing and will do a whole new site later on today…
