• I installed the Theme, and there are no options that make it look anything like the theme.
I enter my Site TItle and it has word wrap and justify left. There are no options to center, no options for anything.
It should be obvious that this is my first attempt at a WP site. However I have built with lots of software and web interfaces. Lots of them. I just hate how bad the workflow for making the site is. I had hoped it would present me with a page that looked maybe a little like Edin and I could edit it. Nothing close. No options to do anything. Its just crappy limited left edge interface with no ability to modify anything. Hello World? NO. I am not starting off with blogging. I want to start by loading images into the nice full width display image slider but no. Searched all afternoon for a means for a site building tutorial and there isnt much out there. The forum cant be posted onto without a SECOND login user. Why is it that WordPress.org and wordpress.com require different logins and users even though the emails are linked? It is just a mess.

  • WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are totally separate – hence separate logins. Email can be “connected” if you are using Gravatar.com, and there’s also a connection if you are using JetPack plugin since it uses WordPress.COM servers for various functions.

Most themes don’t look anything like the demos – but once you start creating content, they’ll start to look like you want.

Have you started creating pages? And a menu?

If you get stuck, the Edin homepage has some tips on setting up the theme:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/edin/

Most of the steps are the same regardless of whether you’re using it on WordPress.com or a self-hosted WordPress site.

I’m really sorry you had such a rough time with your first WordPress site! Getting a site to look like the demo quickly and efficiently is definitely a pain point right now, and something that’s an issue with many themes, particularly business themes that require special setup for the homepage. On WordPress.com we are working on a way to get sites set up like the theme demo at the moment of activation, and we’re looking forward to bringing that to all WordPress.com users later this year.

If there’s anything I can do to help you get set up in the meantime, please let me know.

I need help….I select a theme that looks like what I want….blog that allows posts toline up vertically on the page so that you can scan up or down and click on read more to read more. I preview or even activate the theme to replace the one I have and the post go from left to right….with a 1 then you have to click on 2 to see the next. Why am I not able to set this up as you have it pictured. Also the theme Simple Catch jams and freezes each time I preview. Cannot get it to respond. HostGator had the same problem when I called them.

Hi CKFitzgerald – this forum is for help setting up Edin, but your site at naturalrelieftips.com is running a theme called Happenstance.

Are you looking for help with Edin or Happenstance?

I can try to help you with Edin here in this forum.

I preview or even activate the theme to replace the one I have and the post go from left to right….with a 1 then you have to click on 2 to see the next.

I’m not sure what you mean about the posts “going from left to right” – I would need to see a screenshot to see what you mean. Would it be possible to upload a screenshot to help in troubleshooting?

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

Looking at your site, you seem to have it set to display only one post at a time on the blog page. If you’d like it to display more than that, go to Settings > Reading in your admin area and choose a higher number for “Blog pages show at most” – as you see here: https://cloudup.com/ci9eqiM_8wj

You can upload the screenshot – in a graphic format like JPG, PNG, or PDF – in your Media Library, and provide a link so I can see it, or upload it with a service like Imgur or Snaggy.

If you’d like to set up Edin to look more like this demo, you’ll need to make a few changes. You’ll find the steps in this setup guide:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/edin/ (it’s on WordPress.com but most of the info on this page is the same for self-hosted sites like yours.)

Also the theme Simple Catch jams and freezes each time I preview. Cannot get it to respond. HostGator had the same problem when I called them.

Are you having trouble previewing any theme or just Simple Catch? If it’s just Simple Catch, I’d recommend posting in their forum to see if the developer can help find the cause:

    https://wordpress.org/support/theme/simple-catch

This is the demo theme on WP

I want the posts to stack vertically to view as in the theme Simple Catch.
I cannot show you that one it is unresponsive.

This is what my site looks like….the posts move from side to side. 1,2…
I changed the number to show more then 1 post and it still looks the same.
I have two dummy posts I am using while setting this up. I should see the other post below the first one and I don’t.

Edin does not seem to be what I am looking for…! Maybe it is….I don’t know I get very confused. I am having a hard time setting up a blog. I need a step by step video of the exact theme I want to set up. Otherwise I spend an enormous amount of time searching for answers…frustrating. Simple Catch has a step by step video.

I am grateful that you responded so quickly Kathryn…thank you. Too bad you are not with Simple Catch….or any of the others I chose.

CKFitzgerald – sorry you’re having a tough time setting up your site.

We don’t have a video showing how to set up Edin, but we do have a step-by-step guide here:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/edin/

This is what my site looks like….the posts move from side to side. 1,2…
I changed the number to show more then 1 post and it still looks the same.

If you’ve set the number at Settings > Reading, “Blog pages show at most” is a larger number – like 10 – and yet you’re still only seeing one post at a time on your blog page, there could be a bug in the theme you’re currently using. Have you tried posting in the Happenstance forum for help with this?

    https://wordpress.org/support/theme/happenstance

If you do decide to switch to Edin, please start a new thread here and I’ll be glad to try to help you further:

Thank you Kathryn….the Edin theme is quite confusing to me also…I need a theme that teaches me how to set it up and with a video. Can the Edin theme be set up as a blog…such as Happenstance? I cannot tell by what I have read and seen. The terms and language used in setting up themes is unfamiliar to me. It is like you are speaking in a foreign language and I don’t have an interpreter… and that creates a great amount of frustration and a huge wast of time. That is a down side to wordpress. It is seems as though they assume you know what the language of blogs and websites. I am a novice and this is way over my head.
I really want to learn but I need a teacher/video where it is all explained in plain language. If you can direct me to a blog that has a video that would be great.

    Moderator Kathryn Presner

    (@zoonini)

While I don’t have a video to share specifically for Edin, Edin can certainly be set up like a blog. Any WordPress theme can display your posts on the homepage if you like that display.

If you learn best through video, you might like to check out Lynda.com’s WordPress video tutorials for beginners:

I have no affiliation with Lynda, just thought I’d pass it along. 🙂
