• I’m quite aware of the settings being under “Writing”, and I’ve unchecked the “Convert emoticons like 🙂 and 😛 to graphics on display” option so many times, but upon saving, this option reverts to being checked.

Is this a bug? The reason I ask is because this setting was unchecked soon after I installed WordPress, and somehow, the setting is back on, but I can’t change it at all. I’ve went into the database and changed it, but somehow, it once again reverts to being checked upon logging in the next day.

It’s becoming a real pain, because 1) I don’t want to use emoticons on my blog and 2) the emoticons locations continue bringing back 404 errors no matter what.

Well, it should stay off of course, and #2 above leads me to think there’s a larger problem at play.

Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Fifteen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
