• I have:

    – WordPress 4.1
    – bbPress 2.5.4
    – BuddyPress 2.1.1
    – User Role Editor 4.18.1

    Issue: new capabilities won’t save

How: Users > User Role Editor > select Editor > tick boxes under ‘Custom capabilities’, such as ‘delete_forums’, ‘edit_topics’, ‘publish_topics’, etc., then click ‘Update’

After that you see ‘Role is updated successfully’, but when you refresh the page or just follow the the steps above, the boxes appear unchecked. Once logged in as Editor, I can’t see desired capabilities added.

It is known issue. User Role Editor is not compatible with bbPress. WordPress stores its roles at the database. But bbPress creates its roles on the fly from the PHP code for every page call. Thus special piece of code was added to URE plugin to ignore bbPress roles and capabilities.

Workaround: try to add needed bbPress role to your editor user as a secondary role instead of adding bbPress capabilities directly to the Editor role.
