I use Dreamhost and my original WP install was done myself since their one-click installs didn’t exist yet. So when I do an upgrade, I have to do it myself. Usually, it is seamless or I can resolve the problems easily.

    Not this time.

I run the upgrade.php and get sent to the login page. I log in and the log in page just reloads. No error message, nothing.

    I did a new password.
I did the md5 hash thing (via http://www.miraclesalad.com/webtools/md5.php since the link in the troubleshooting was dead) in the database for the password.
    I’ve checked the paths.

I backed up the database before starting (learned that lesson the hard way ONCE). I did not overwrite the contents folder or the wp-config file. I deleted the wp-admin and wp-includes. In other words, I followed the instructions.

    What’s going on here?

  • Hi – I’ve encountered this a couple of times and resolved it by moving my plugins folder to another location on my server, logging in and then moving the plugins folder back. I’ve had to do this even when I already deactivated the plugins. Maybe this will work for you too.

So, then take the plugins folder from paulaoffutt.com/wp-content/ and put it in the paulaoffutt.com/temp-bu?

    I’ll give it a try.

Yes, move them out of the /wp-content/ folder. It’s worked for me before.

Subject: Cannot login despite several trials?
    Can some one tell
how I can retain [restore] all the posts if I do a total new install?

    I am at this stage
    I did a fresh installation of WP2.7RC1.

I retained previous database so as not to loose posts.
    Result
I came back to square one where all struggle had begun.
I cannot login and links from the single page that is online lead to 404

I would appreciate if any one can tell:

1.Shall I delete database and restore it?
    2. Shall I recover emergency password and manage to login to admin panel and do proper restore from wp-admin restore backup?
    3. I could have created new database, but would have lost all the posts. Am I correct? Can I restore previous posts from admin panel on to the new database?

[After creating new database it amounts to new install]

—You may skip the part below if you are short of time.—
    How it began?
    [1]
Upgrade from 2.6.2 to 2.6.3 was succeeded by several attempts to be able to login.
Ultimately with emergency password recovery, I could login to access my admin panel.
    [2]
Now it was fine, with the 2.6.2 database and default theme working.
    [3 a]
I added new users, gave administration profile, and deleted admin.
I was supposed to transfer the existing posts to the new user [admin2]
When the ‘Where shall I transfer the posts?’message flickered I erred and with a misplaced tick mark, my web site was bereft of all its posts.
    [3 b]
I restored the posts to the new user [admin2] through the admin panel.
I recovered all posts, but the entire category structure got messed up.
Now, I was unable to login and links on homepage lead to 404.

    Yes, it worked.

    That problem is solved. Thanks!

Now, to fix the other problems with that site and the others…….
