It isn’t *really* necessary, but it is very hightly recommended for any theme, not just purchased ones. If you don’t use a child theme you’ll need to alwys re-do any updates that you’ve done when the theme is updated.

It’s the same as installing any other theme.
If you have problems with it, you need to contact the vendor/author as part of the money that you’ve paid is for their support.
