• Looking over my site stats, using awstats provided by my host, I noticed that when I look at the referrer sites, I have a ton of those $@#!* spam sites like viagra and poker. Even have a site for psych exams if you can believe it.

Anyway… what harm, if any, does this pose? If I understand what this stat mean, it just shows sites where someone came from to get to mine, correct? If that is the case, it was probably the spammer?

I have tarpit and comment mod on, so I just delete the spam sitting in comment mod. You’d think spammers would realize after awhile that their spam isn’t going to get linked, wouldn’t you?

Also, in my 404 errors, I see a lot of hits to my cgi bin. Is that someone trying to possibly find something to exploit my site security? Maybe get their hands on a password or something? I’ve also noticed someone keeps pulling up a cfg file in my plugins folder. Maybe for the same reason? Or, it might just be a WP user trying to figure out how to use the plugin?

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • My cpanel lets me password the /wp-admin/ directory/folder.

Which I have done. And its not the same password/login for my admin login.

So the only page hits there should come from me, if not, I have a problem.

I find they look for dlls, word doc files, nonexistant directories, just about anything I don’t have on my sites.

Another thing to check is who is linking to you.

I have had to block several sites.

Thanks for the info, cb… I’m going to look at the cpanel password deal. How do you block a site from linking to you though? My host uses Cpanel too.

down at the bottom of cpanel, where it says ‘IP Deny manager’.

click on that, and put the IP address of the site you don’t want linking to you in the blank provided. Click on ‘add’.

refresh your screen, and it should now list it as a IP adress that is blocked.

If you don’t know the IP address, the Network tools has domain to IP lookup.

    hope that helps.

Oh, I have been able to block most, but some still link. maybe they have enough IP addresses my blocking one doesn’t help. No idea really.
