I overwrote the file /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/non_pope/class.nextgen_shortcode_manager.php with the old version of the php file which temporarily fixed the bug.
    Please advise

@emma@glic.me – Have you tried re-installing NextGEN Gallery on your site?

yes and I tried disabling other plugins to see if there was a conflict too. I don’t want to try the reset button because I’m afraid I’ll lose all my settings and it’s a big site.

@emma@glic.me – The Reset Option can be a last resort type of corrective measure but it may be necessary in this case as it appears your other attempts have not corrected this issue … although if you are using a caching plugin/service that could be holding the “bad” code in place not allowing you to see a resolution as well.
