• I am new to using WordPress. One of the problems I have come across is how to link both the main navigation buttons and the sidebar menu buttons with the same content? Some of the content within the sidebar menu does not translate to be the same in the Main navigation bar. Thank-you.

  • Look in your dashboard under Appearance > Menus and see what you have there. If you have more than one menu created, you’ll want to then check what areas your theme has specified as its native menu areas. Most themes will have at least one, Primary, or the menu in the header. For sidebars, while it’s possible your theme could have them, it’s more likely that it’s a Widget with a Custom menu. If you are looking for them to have the same links, then set the menus with the same menu name. It’s also very possible that you don’t have any menus created, in which case you should do so by giving it a name, creating it, and then sliding the links that you want on the menu into the menu area.

I want to get rid of the widget on the right side entirely but if I do, will the information in that widget section be deleted entirely? If so, I want to transfer first all the content into my main navigation menu. I am not even sure how some of the content was sent to the widget section in the first place and not all entirely to the main navigation menu? My goal would be to have just two Main menus (Main Navigation Menu which will hold all of my major content for the site and the Top Bar Menu which is basically external links to other websites). As you can tell I am still trying to understand the terminology of WordPress. Thank-you for your patience. Any assistance in the matter would be greatly appreciated!

To get rid of the widget just slide it out of the container. Widgets don’t contain major information. They just help shape how your data is presented. They may, however, contain some settings, but the real data will stay in your Posts or Pages. As for the Menus you want, make sure you have two menus created, any name you wish, for example, Main and TopBar.

Here is an example of a theme that supports two menus, http://take.ms/HrM9J. In this case, they are called Primary and Secondary, which is semi-arbitrarily decided by the theme author. In this screenshot, the Primary menu was created and called Blank, with nothing associated with it. Rather than deactivating the menu, this was easier.

If you are just going to create external links, then you’ll need to create a menu for each using the Links option under the menu area. If the widget you want to get rid of is the Custom Menu widget, then you’ll have a menu that you can reuse. If it is some other type of custom widget, and anything is possible, you may have to start over creating a menu item for each link.

My website is frdavidhogan.com. I thought if you saw my issues that it may help me understand a little better what you are recommending. In the main navigation bar, the menus that are correct are the Home (image size is too small), Homilies (does not show the preview image until you click on the link). On the right widget area under pages the two menus that are correct are About and Blog pages (I am trying to make non static pages). But oddly enough both the Contact and Holy Land Trip pages are what I was looking for in both places.

I am following an online tutorial video which coincides with the Hueman demo theme. http://demo.alxmedia.se/hueman/ ideally I would like to have all my pages non-static pages. Thanks for your help!
