How to modify a parent/child .org theme, if I'm a wp.com guy?!

    This is the third time I have hit this wall, and the various help pages on WP.org support, just don’t help. For instance, for a simple site, I need to know how to change the coloring of the site title and menu tabs. I understand that one should not mess with the Parent theme, but the child theme doesn’t have anything that jumps out at me.

    There must be a WordPress for Dummies, but short of that, any ideas?
