Forbidden 403 error

I am getting a 403 – forbidden error. I tried to update my web site to WP 4.0, and I cannot bring my web site up. What do I need to do to get it to work so I can see my site. It was originally done in WP 3.6.

I was able to find my files from my website, but cannot view it or get the dashboard to come up.

Here is what it says: Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I’m not seeing any errors — it’s actually all white screen.

In your WP-CONFIG.PHP, change this:
```
define('WP_DEBUG', false);
```
to:
```
define('WP_DEBUG', true);
```
That should show some more helpful error messages and give you an idea what could be the problem.

Most likely it’s a plugin that’s causing the issue.

Very possible, and I had not thought of that. If you can get to your WordPress installation via cPanel or FTP/SFTP or whatever, temporarily change the name of your “plugins” folder to “plugouts” to deactivate all plugins. If that fixes things, then go back and change that folder’s name back to “plugins” and then go to your Dashboard to re-activate whatever plugins you had been running.

I think I know what might have happened, but no guarantee that it will be fixed. I’m also going to send a copy of the messages to my web hosting provider.

I managed to get WP 4.0 on my web site, but now I cannot bring up my old files so I can see my website without having to start all over again
