• Excellent theme but am having a few inconsistent results with the gallery caption ‘reveal’ on the iPad.

When on the ‘make’ demo websites (e.g. https://demo.thethemefoundry.com/make-three/ )the captions on the homepage gallery images are revealed by touch in the same way they are revealed with a cursor hover.

However, on my website (and others that I have seen made), the caption reveal does not work on touchscreen devices (i.e. iPad). The only captions that are possible to see are those that have links attached (on my site the top and middle right images) when tapping several times.

How can I fix the image caption reveal for touch screen devices so that it works as on the demo webpages? It’s a fantastic feature of the theme.

    Hi there!

This is a tricky UX issue to fix. I’ve filed a ticket, and we’ll be sure to let you know once we patch this problem.

@gurumag can you share a link to a page where this caption issue is happening?

We fixed a very similar sounding issue back in version 1.2.0, and currently, the captions of non-linked gallery items are revealing correctly for me on iOS devices…

@gurumag nice looking site! I’ve just tried it on an iPhone 5 and an iPad retina, and the captions reveal for me when I tap the gallery items, even the ones that don’t have a link.

Which particular models of touchscreen devices are you having this issue on?

    iPad 2 – I’ll try it again now…

Hmmm, it sort of works – but not as well as on the demo site.

If I tap deliberately on the image once or twice (as if I am trying to click a link) then the caption appears.

But on the demo site, the captions appear whenever I touch the screen on the image (e.g. if scrolling up and down). By this I mean that on the demo site you see the caption almost ‘by accident’ as you move up and down the page. On my site you have to choose and deliberately tap and image to see what the caption is.

    Does that make sense?

If you try them side-by-side you will see the difference. It may be a subtle difference, but as my site has an image-driven front end, it needs to be blatantly obvious that the images serve a purpose.

    Thoughts?

That’s pretty weird. I’m not sure why the behavior is different between the demo site and your site. One thing I noticed is that you have a couple of plugins that add other scripts to the page. If you disable Jetpack and WP External Links temporarily, does that make a difference?

    It gets even more weird.
I disabled both plugins (and the limit login attempts one, the only plugins that were activated) and now the images act more like the demo site… except… Now when you touch (caption appears) and scroll the screen, on release the caption in the image above becomes visible.
    ?!?

I.e. You are getting two captions for the price of one…!

@gurumag we haven’t been able to reproduce the double caption thing. Does this happen on any other devices, or just the one iPad?

Ok, I’ve got the same thing on my iPhone (4). Have recorded a video to show it on this device:

    Hope it’s making sense,

@gurumag Thanks for recording and sharing this video! This certainly helps clarify the issue.

I’ve updated our support ticket. Corey, our developer, will be sure to follow-up with you when he has more information.
