Loading admin-ajax.php takes 3-6 seconds

    I have run http://www.pingdom.com and it reports that admin-ajax.php takes sometimes between 3- 6 seconds but is only 763b in size, and loads after everything else.

    What can I do to improve the overall site loading time? I have reduced the Plugins and images to the minimum.
