    I’m working on a site for someone else. She is wondering why people say they are commenting but the comments never show up.

    When I take a look in the WordPress comments tab I see there are approved comments, the most recent one being in July. There are 28 total approved comments. Nothing in the spam, pending or trash.

    Now, when I got to the Akismet stats, I see the following for the listed months:

    may = 72 ham
    june = 57 ham
    july = 44 ham
    august = 37 ham
    september = 32 ham

    For each month, there is 0 spam.

    So what is ham? Is this some cutesy reference to legitimate comments? And if it is, where are all these comments? They are certainly not appearing on the web site nor in the WordPress comments section.

    Thanks.

    Ham is a reference to items cleared by Akismet. The stats page shows running totals for comments and feedback form submissions.

    If a comment or feedback item is removed, the Akismet stats numbers do not decrease. Same if a post that had many comments is deleted, the Akismet stats remain the same.

    Comments in the spam folder are removed automatically after fifteen days, so if the site owner spammed a comment a month ago, it would have been removed by now.

    Lots of possibilities as to why the numbers may not jive up, if you’d like to drop us a line privately with the API key and URL in question, we can look into it further.
