Want to change my admin username since we’re getting warned about it being so susceptible to hackers. Followed forum advice for how to do this by creating a new Administrator account so I can delete my #1 ID: admin.

When I get to the page where I am to delete all data assigned to admin, I get really nervous. If I assign my data/posts to the new administrator account in the drop down list before deletion, am I safe?

As this is our company’s web site and I am not super technical (though in charge of managing our site – we are small!), I don’t want to mess anything up. I keep our database backed up weekly with Backup Buddy.

Thanks for any advice and/or reassurance!

    Linda

  • I know it’s scary, but yes you should be safe.
Deleting users does not delete posts form the database.

The worst thing that could happen would be that the posts would not get attributed to an author and need to be reassigned. But that is doubtful as long as you attribute them to your new admin.

Thank you for your prompt and reassuring reply! I’m going to bite the bullet and delete…but not until first thing in the morning when I’m at my most “technically patient”.

You have reassured me and I appreciate it!!

FYI, when deleting a user, WordPress gives the option of assigning posts to another user.

Apologies for not posting back with results…

You were right: I assigned everything to my new admin name and it worked! I now have a name that is NOT “admin”.

Thanks to post repliers for your help and reassurances!

    Linda 🙂
