Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded

    One of my sites fails scan every time with this error. On the option page I put in 15 seconds, then 12 as max execution time, but that doesn’t help.

    This site doesn’t have a lot of data. Sites with a lot more data scan just fine with the same configuration settings.

    I take back the claim that it was configured the same as the others.

    These 2 were checked.

    Scan files outside your WordPress installation
    Scan image files as if they were executable

    That said, Wordfence should still work even if they are checked. I’ve left them unchecked for now.

    Why would Wordfence struggle mightily if these are checked?

    I think thats a php.ini setting error you are seeing, not a Wordfence setting. I have mine set for 256mb in the Wordfence settings on my commercial sites and have yet to have a problem. I think my php.ini is set at 128mb. Its usually /etc/php.ini on a Linux server.

    Let us know if this does not help.

    I will check to see if my host allows such things. I doubt it.

    I tried both settings individually. It’s the check images as executable that blows it up. Is there a more efficient way to make these checks? If not, perhaps you should add a clear warning to the options menu?

    Thats a good suggestion regardless. If you have a good amount of images in high resolutions, it could slow things down considerably.

    This page has some suggestions if you don’t have access to change it in php.ini

    No problem. I used to watch football more, but last time I did, the Titans totally blew their chance at another superbowl and I stopped. I was getting a wee bit passionate about it. 🙂

    I think I might have missed the trees for the forest. The execution time is also set in the php.ini and is a separate entry.

    Look for max_execution_time = 30 and change the value to 60.

    The reason I remembered was when I had to import a huge bunch of posts into WP one time and the importer kept dying. I increased the memory and the execution time.

    Adding that setting to .php/5.3/phprc (dreamhost VPS) fixed the problem on one blog. I will repeat the process with the others.
