Change Hompage Excerpt Background

I am trying to change the post listings to be black font on white background to make the theme brighter. I have figured out how to change the font colour to black, but I cannot seem to figure out how to change the boxes to white. Any help appreciated. I want to keep the menu bar black with white text, but the opposite for the posts.
