• Lately I’ve been hearing from the people who visit my site that the galleries don’t really work well on their phone (I use the FancyBox style). I’ve tried it and indeed it’s acting a bit weird. The frame is really small and replaces itself all the time when you tip to the next or previous picture.

I’ve tried the ‘Photoswipe for Nextgen Gallery’ plugin which seemed promising, but it turns out that it has issues with Chrome. Then I read that the new FancyBox 2 has been made responsive. I don’t know if this will solve my problem at all, but first, is it even possible to update NextGen’s built-in FancyBox?

@basdemos – If you want to use a Lightbox library that is not bundled with NextGEN Gallery (for convenience purposes) then I would suggest turning off the Lightbox Effects under Gallery > Other Options to give it a try.

If you want to manually modify an existing Lightbox Effect (not for the feint of heart … and a bit beyond our scope of support) you can open up the advanced settings and change the paths to the JavaScript and/or CSS, etc. as needed to use the “new” library.

Cais, thanks for the info! Before I take a dive in the code, do you perhaps know an easier way to make the galleries a bit more mobile friendly? (all lightbox effects seem to be a bit clumsy on mobile)

@basdemos – The Lightbox effects we bundle with NextGEN Gallery were more for convenience than anything else. If they are not mobile friendly it would fall back to those standard libraries for the most part.

This was also the reason why we chose to go with our NextGEN Pro Lightbox (included with NextGEN Plus and NextGEN Pro) as it is also much more mobile friendly than any of the NextGEN Gallery bundled libraries.

Of course, we may upgrade those libraries but as I noted, we really only included them as a convenience … and upgrades would still only be to bundle a more current version.
