Looking for a gallery plugin with a special feature

Hi there,
I am a huge fan of nextgen gallery and I can’t say how much I appreciate all the work the developers put in this nice gallery.

However, now I am looking for a gallery where I place thumbnails and the actual pictures would not open in a new window but in a predefined area. Something like this:

I am afraid, I won’t be able to achieve this with nextgen gallery. Does anybody know if there is a gallery plugin I could use for this purpose?
