Admin setting to turn trackbacks off isn't working

Hello, in my WordPress install Discussion settings, I’ve unselected “Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)” due to a severe increase in trackback spam, yet I’m still getting trackback notifications mixed in with my comments.

Can someone please tell me if there is something I’m not doing right to stop the trackbacks from showing?

Also, in checking individual articles they still have “allow pings” selected, is this the same thing? Do I need to de-select this on all my posts to stop the trackbacks? There is differing infos on the web about this too, some saying it’s trackback and some saying it’s notifying Google, etc that you’ve updated your post.
