Is it possible in the latest version of wordpress to get a 2 column layout in the dashboard ( as opposed to 2 )
Umm…did you mean a 1 column layout, as opposed to 2?
This is possible, with a child theme and enqueuing a css file for the admin side of things. Or we could build a plugin to handle it.

I like your idea for a plugin. I’m busier than I used to be and don’t want to start mucking around with wordpress internal stuff.
If you look at my “Seeing Red” plugin (http://wordpress.org/plugins/seeing-red/), you can see how to enqueue admin-side stylesheets.
Whoops! Looks like it’s time to upgrade that plugin!
