Retina @2x images giving 404 errors

    I’m getting a load of 404 errors (just for this month) on retina @2x images, and they all seem to be from the same referring URL (the one listed above). Here’s a sample (404URL – #errors)

    Quite a few are images on the Rotating Tweets widget, but not all. They are also occurring elsewhere (site logo, footer, etc., cf. the /uploads/ images).

    That same Rotating Tweets are anyplace there is a side bar (all except root home page) and the footer is on all pages/posts. Yet, these retina 404s are not apparently occurring on those.

    I have no idea what the cause is. This is beyond me. *baffled*

    It’s a bug. See analysis here Seems to be a mixture of retina.js and Customizr (with maybe some WordPress thrown in?).

    Whatever. You can fix it by uploading copies of your full-sized files with a @2x prefix.

    You’re seeing more of them because more and more people are getting retina screens. I mistakenly thought it was only my slider images and logo, but that was just that most people were visiting the home page (maybe just to pick up a tel no. or opening hours).

    Okay, silly question — upload with a @2x prefix? What do you mean? When I create the image, export it as @2xNAME or something?

    Also, what about the logo that I uploaded via the Customize feature? Customizr won’t know to look for a new uploaded version with @2x in the name somewhere will it?

    I know little about retina (actually, near nothing). Personally, I don’t even own a smart phone – still using an old flip phone (yeah, I’m dated like that).

    Oops, meant suffix, sorry.

    filename@2x.jpg etc.

    Should add that you will need to upload them with FTP.

    Will Customizr recognize a 2nd logo with …@2x.png for retina screens? I had to upload the logo originally via the Customize theme feature of Customizr. 36 of the 404 errors were to a retina version of the logo — “/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/JLR-Logo-250×100@2x.png – 36”

    Also, do I need to start uploading two versions of every image I use? If so, that would only double the server space used, which seems like it should be unnecessary to do and a waste of server space.

    If you want to solve your 404 problem, then you have do copy only the full-sized images–including the logo–on your server. Don’t use the media uploader for this. It will not work (and will create a lot more images, none of which you need).

    All the other sized images at retina size are created correctly by Customizr.

    As to whether it’s a waste of space, it depends if you want retina support or not. All your images (apart from the full-sized images) are currently replicated at 2×2 x the size, in order to give you retina support. If you consider that a waste of space, then switch off retina support.

    When I upload images, I only upload one size — full size. That would mean uploading second copies of all of the images I’ve uploaded before (>200).

    Also, I upload all my images via WP’s media uploader, so, as you can see above, they are uploaded into year/month directories. If I FTP second copies of those images, where do I upload them (especially the logo)? Do I upload the copies to the same directory? Does it matter?

    You upload one size, but WordPress/Customizr create several sizes.

    The copies need to be in the same directory as the original. With 200 images, if you aren’t adept at scripting some sort of routine to do it for you then I’d just live with it and wait for a fix (no idea if that’s forthcoming or not; nikeo knows about it, but I don’t know if the bug’s in his code or someone else’s).

    Waiting seems like the better solution. I will upload a version of the logo, however, to the same directory, but just with @2x with the file name.
