• My client’s site was suspended for hogging all the resources. I activated CloudFlare to cut down on attacks, and this seemed to help a lot. I also installed WordFence for more security against brute force attacks. Over night, things were nice and quiet.

Today though, we logged into WordPress to edit the site, and things spiked again. My client logged out and the usage dropped. Twenty minutes later, I logged in and usage spiked. I logged out and it’s dropped again.

What could be causing this? I’m worried about malware as they didn’t have a lot of security before this. But isn’t it strange that it only seems to be happening when we’re logged in? Any ideas?

The site is pacifichepc.org and pacifichepc.org/hepctip/ (two WordPress installs).

  • Outside of malware, spikes can also be caused by resource intensive plugins or themes – or a combination of the two. To test for that, try deactivating plugins you have installed and see if the resource spike disappears. If it does, you will know the culprit.

There are also performance monitoring plugins you can try to see where the issue is. For example: http://wordpress.org/plugins/p3-profiler/
