2 simple questions

I’ve been playing around with this theme and learning a lot about wordpress in the last few days. I see two things in the slideshow on the download page that I have not figured out how to do in this theme.

1) The left sidebar – how do I get that content?
2) the top blog post displays full-width across the column and the rest are 2 across. I have them all 2 across but how do I get the top one full width?
