When was /category/ removed?

    I notice in a default WP install if I provide custom permalink as /%category%/%postname%/ the resulting URL does not contain the /category/ word anymore.

    It used to be there in earlier WP versions which we used to remove via plugins.

    When [in which version of WP] was this /category/ word removed?
