Show products by category problem

I’ve created a page where products are shown by category using a shortcode. I set the cat name, the items per_page, the colums and so on… The problem is: if the products of a given category are 48 and I set the per_page value to 12, it shows the first 12 products but there’s no ‘advance to the next page’ button to see the rest of them.
Is it the way it’s supposed to work?…’cause I can’t fit all of those products in one single page.
