The sitemap created by WordPress SEO by Yoast is always disappearing. I have to uncheck it in admin, save changes, then re-check it and save again, then it reappears – for a while. How long? I don’t know, when I think to come back and check it a few weeks later, it’s always gone. I get a 404 page not found error.

I switched a while back to the Google XML Sitemaps, just to have something reliable, until Yoast fixed theirs. Months later, I figured, they MUST have fixed such an obvious, annoying problem, which so many people have documented here in support, so in the interests of reducing the number of plugins, I switched back to Yoast’s sitemap.

But, to my surprise and disappointment, the problem persists. Why is this not being addressed?

Finally figured this out. This has been a persistent problem, and I’ve seen others post about it. It’s so simple — too bad I couldn’t get an answer on this forum. I finally ran into an obscure YouTube video by a guy with a heavy Indian accent I could barely understand who had the answer.

It’s a conflict with a W3 Total Cache setting: On the Browser Cache settings page, there is this option:

Do not process 404 errors for static objects with WordPress

Uncheck that, and the Sitemap disappearing issue disappears.

The option is supposed to reduce server load, however, so it would be good to keep it checked.

To do so, I am trying this: Adding the sitemap the “404 error exception list” on the same Browser Cache page, which would theoretically solve the problem. However, the line I had didn’t work for me at first. But now I am trying this:

    sitemap(_index)?\.xml
    (sitemapindex|[a-z0-9_-]+)\.xml

I’ll see how this works, hopefully it will. But to be sure, I want to try it for a few days, because in the past, the sitemap would be visible for a while, then disappear. I’ll post back here when I’m certain it’s working or not.
