I have trouble with sitemap files. Robots.txt is pointing to the correct compressed file /sitemap.xml.gz that has inside the index of the other compressed files.

I have the following options enabled at XML Sitemap options:
    Enable sitemap Indexes
    Paginate Sitemap Indexes
    Maximum Posts Per Sitemap: 50000

The problem is that when I try to test the compressed files, I can’t download the last two files (I reordered the list to make it easier to explain):

    XML Sitemap
This sitemap index contains 6 sitemaps
    sitemap_addl.xml.gz
    sitemap_page.xml.gz
    sitemap_category.xml.gz
    sitemap_post_tag.xml.gz
    sitemap_post.xml.gz
    sitemap_attachment.xml.gz

    Problem loading page:
    File not found
Firefox can’t find the file at {website}/sitemap_attachment.xml.gz.
Check the file name for capitalization or other typing errors.
Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted.

Here are my server settings displayed by the pluggin:
    Operating System Linux
    Server Apache
    Memory usage 40.84 MByte
    MYSQL Version 5.5.37
    SQL Mode Not set
    PHP Version 5.4.27
    PHP Safe Mode Off
    PHP Allow URL fopen On
    PHP Memory Limit 256M
    PHP Max Upload Size 256M
    PHP Max Post Size 256M
PHP Max Script Execute Time 180
    PHP Exif support Yes ( V1.4 )
    PHP IPTC support Yes
    PHP XML support Yes
    WordPress Version 3.9.1
    WordPress DB Version 27916
    Multisite Yes

I also tried disabling the “Enable sitemap Indexes” option and I got the following message when trying to download the file:

XML Parsing Error: no element found
    Location: {website}/sitemap.xml
    Line Number 1, Column 1:

  • Hi xalj,

Typically this no element found error means that there are no pages for the sitemap to index. First, if you have less than 50,000 links on your site, you don’t strictly need to use indexed sitemaps. Second, if you don’t have any attachments, say, you can uncheck attachments, or any post type or taxonomy that’s empty. What’s your website?

Ok went back to “Disabled Sitemap Indexes”
    http://www.larepublica.ec/sitemap.xml

    Hi xalj,

That does look like an empty file; go to Settings -> Permalinks to update your permalinks. If that doesn’t fix things, uncheck the dynamic sitemap option and see if you can generate a static sitemap file.

    Done. Still not working.
I am unable to uncheck the dynamic sitemap option. It is grey…

    Hi xalj,

Are you using a WordPress multisite? If so, then yes, that option wouldn’t be available.

Hey Peter! Yes, Multisite. I’ve been reading that things like this can be caused by spaces in between

    <?php
    ?>

I will check that. Any other reason that you might think it is casuing this?

    Thank you.

I disabled this Feature of this plugin. I’m going with another plugin to generate sitemaps. It is working.
    Thanks for your help Peter!

No problem, xalj; the other thing to check is if the rewrite rules are working properly on your site, the Rewrite Rules Inspector plugin is good for testing this.
